Flood risk prompts evacuation alert for 2 dozen properties in southwest B.C.
Residents of several properties on B.C.'s South Coast are being told to prepare to leave at a moment's notice as data shows an increased risk of flooding.
About two dozen properties in the Gates Lake/Poole Creek area are under evacuation alert. The Squamish-Lillooet Regional District says there is potential for a glacial lake outburst, increasing the risk of overland flooding and debris flooding in the area.
The district says data collected from the Place Glacier monitoring system shows the lake has reached the same volume as in 2025, when a lake outburst occurred.
Officials are urging caution in the area, asking residents and the public to avoid streambanks and other waterways.
People at affected properties are being told to pack an emergency bag with essential items, like government ID, medication and insurance papers, and have it ready to go, if needed.
